G. F. Händel Messiah

George Frideric Handel’s oratorio ”Messiah” is undoubtedly one of the most famous and performed works in music history. It consists of a string of magnificent choral movements and exquisite arias. The texts are derived from the Bible and describe the dream of the Messiah’s arrival and the salvation of mankind. The monumental work was composed in just three weeks and premiered for the first time in 1742 at a charity concert in Dublin, where it became an immediate success.

Handel himself revised the work several times, and in the 1780s, Mozart re-arranged the music. Eventually, ”Messiah” took the world by storm, and in the 19th century, it became a cherished Christmas tradition in Sweden as well. The captivating ”Hallelujah”chorus can always be counted on to introduce the proper Christmas spirit!

 The Royal Opera initiated the tradition of performing Messiah at the Storkyrkan (today also known as the Stockholm Cathedral) in 1928. Since 1977, the music is performed by the choirs and musicians of the Cathedral itself. 95 years after the start of the Messiah tradition we still aim to perform the Messiah with both solemnity and the playful musicality that characterized Handel and his era. A living tradition!
