A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols

It is impossible to imagine an English Christmas without Carol singers singing in the middle of the shopping stress. Wandering around singing Christmas Carols also has an early Scandinavian counterpart, when the students at the Latin schools – the devils – wandered around, and sang Christmas songs for the bread. The star boys of the Swedish Lucia processions are the devils’ recent heirs.
A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols has become synonymus with Christmas celebrations in the English-speaking world. In many English homes, Christmas celebrations begin when the BBC-radio brodcasts this carol service from King’s College Chapel in Cambridge, a tradition that began the mourning of all the deaths of World War I.
In this music service, texts from the Pentateuch to the Gospel of John are interspersed with choral songs; a total of nine recordings and nine songs. An essential feature is the famous English carols; Christmas songs, where everyone is invited to sing along. Who doesn’t want to tune in to “O Come, all ye faithful” in arrangement for choir, roaring organ, and the classic, trebles?
