Christmas with Rutter
15 December @ 17:00 - 18:10
100SEK – 290SEKJohn Rutter is one of the world’s foremost composers of choral music and is especially renowned for his Christmas compositions. For over 50 years, he has both arranged and composed original music that has become a central part of Christmas celebrations around the globe. Rutter’s works are characterised by melodic beauty, accessibility, and a sense of hope. Songs such as Shepherd’s Pipe Carol, Candlelight Carol, and Angel’s Carol are performed by amateur and professional choirs of all ages, capturing with great sensitivity the joyful message of Christmas.
Gerald Finzi’s cantata In Terra Pax reflects the composer’s awareness of life’s transience and his love for the English countryside. Composed in 1954, shortly before his death from leukaemia, the work unites two verses from Robert Bridges’ poem Noel: Christmas Eve, 1913 with the Christmas narrative from the Gospel of Luke. The piece portrays a poet who, on a cold Christmas Eve, hears church bells and imagines the angelic choir singing to the shepherds on the first Christmas. Despite Finzi’s personal sorrows and the dark shadows of war, In Terra Pax conveys a powerful sense of hope and peace.
