SUMMARY:Visionary Soundscapes | Svensk musikvår
DESCRIPTION:When Svensk Musikvår – the annual festival for contemporary art music – returns to Storkyrkan\, it does so with a concert where the Stockholm Saxophone Quartet meets the organ in three entirely new works. The compositions\, commissioned by the festival with support from the Swedish Arts Council and the Helge Ax:son Johnson Foundation\, explore themes of time\, the psyche\, and the depths of existence. \nZacharias Ehnvall’s Window of Tolerance unfolds like an audible wave across the mind – a resonant reflection on the passage of time and the expanses of perception. Paula af Malmborg Ward’s Timestuck is a musical dialogue between organ and saxophones\, a fascinating journey through the paradoxes of time and human consciousness. David Riebe’s Vertigo draws us into the sensation of dizziness and liminality – where sweet and chaotic sonic landscapes meet in the organ’s powerful resonance filling the church space. The saxophonists move freely around the room\, creating a sound that seems to emanate from everywhere and nowhere at once. \nThis concert\, in one of Stockholm’s most historic churches\, becomes a meeting place where contemporary Swedish music reveals its vibrant breadth and distinctive voice. Welcome to experience new sounds and profound expressions at Svensk Musikvår’s festival 2025. \nStockholms saxofonkvartett\nJörgen Pettersson\nLinn Persson Kornhammar\nMathias Karlsen Björnstad\nTheo Hillborg\nMila Ortgies Thoors organ \nfrom the programme\nZacharias Ehnvall Window of Tolerance\nPaula af Malmborg Ward Timestuck\nDavid Riebe Vertigo \nAge limit: 6 years and older \nFree admission \nPlease note that large bags\, backpacks\, suitcases\, and strollers are not allowed in the church! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow do I get there?\n\n\n\nStorkyrkan – Stockholm Cathedral is situated in Old Town just beside the Royal Castle. SUMMARY:J.S. Bach St John Passion
DESCRIPTION:S:t Jacobs Kammarkör\nKarl-Magnus Fredriksson Christ\nLars Johansson Brissman Pilate\nCarl Unander-Scharin Evangelist\nIda Zackrisson Soprano\nAnna Zander Alto\nOrfeus barock Stockholm\nElin Gabrielsson Concertmaster\nGary Graden Conductor \nProgram\nJohann Sebastian Bach St John Passion BWV 245 \nWelcome to a powerful musical experience as S:t Jacob’s Chamber Choir performs one of the most significant works in Western music history – Johann Sebastian Bach’s St John Passion. \nThe St John Passion was first performed on Good Friday\, 7 April 1724\, in Leipzig. It was the first Passion Bach composed after assuming his post as Cantor at St Thomas Church\, marking a new chapter in his career. The work is based on the evangelist John’s account of the suffering and death of Christ and stands out for its dramatic intensity and emotional immediacy. \nMusically\, the work alternates between dramatic choruses\, heartfelt arias\, and recitatives that narrate the Passion story. Hear the mournfully beautiful alto aria Es ist vollbracht (“It is finished”)\, the tender prayer of Ich folge dir gleichfalls (“I follow thee with joyful steps”)\, and the deeply moving Zerfließe\, mein Herze (“Dissolve\, my heart\, in floods of tears”). The St John Passion is a musical journey that moves from darkness to light\, from suffering to hope. Bach’s unique ability to convey the emotional and theological depth of the text through music finds full expression here – from the fury of the crowd’s cries to the profound stillness of the closing movements. \nIt promises a deeply moving concert experience that will linger long after the final note has faded. \n  \nAge limit: 6 years and older \nTicket prices: 110-395 SEK\, discounts available for seniors\, children/youth/students \n\n\nPlease note that large bags\, backpacks\, suitcases\, and strollers are not allowed in the church! \n\n\n  \n\n\nBUY YOUR TICKETS HERE!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow do I get there?\n\n\n\n\n\nStorkyrkan – Stockholm Cathedral is situated in Old Town just beside the Royal Castle. SUMMARY:The Apology
DESCRIPTION:The Apology – Sii bivde ándagassii is a staged work created in response to the High Mass at which Archbishop Antje Jackelén apologized for the Church of Sweden’s role in the colonisation of the Sámi people. After seeing the televised service\, Åsa Simma\, director of the Giron Sámi Teáhter\, was inspired to create a total work of art where history\, collective pain\, and hope meet within the ritual space of the theatre. \nThe performance highlights the Sámi people’s loss of land\, language\, and culture\, as well as the need for redress and deeper dialogue. To the powerful organ compositions of Hans-Ola Ericsson\, percussion\, quiet joik\, storytelling\, newly written dialogues\, and visually striking stage imagery\, words\, music\, movement\, and the artistry of Britta Marakatt-Labba are woven together into one whole. The Apology invites the audience into a shared process of reflection\, memory\, and reconciliation – with each performance leaving its imprint on both the individual and the community. \nThe Apology premiered in Uppsala Cathedral in the autumn of 2025 and will subsequently tour cathedrals across Sweden. The production is a collaboration with Estrad Norr. \nMarja Utsi\, Cecilia Persson & Åsa Simma actors\nÅsa Simma and Kjell Peder Johanson script\nKjell Peder Johanson och Indra Lorentzen direction\nIndra Lorentzen choreography\nHans-Ola Ericsson composer\, organist\nTommy Björk percussion\nBritta Marakatt-Labba visual art\nSara Svonni costume\nAgneta Enzell set design\nCaisa Jackson makeup design\nEmanuel Arvanitis lighting design \n  \nAge limit: 6 years and older \nFree admission \nPlease note that large bags\, backpacks\, suitcases\, and strollers are not allowed in the church! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow do I get there?\n\n\n\nStorkyrkan – Stockholm Cathedral is situated in Old Town just beside the Royal Castle. SUMMARY:From God to Human
DESCRIPTION:The title of the concert alludes to a recurring theme in several of the works: humanity receiving something from God – through prayer\, worship\, or reflection. That “something” can take many forms: the wind and the Holy Spirit in Vuojnha Biegga\, trust in Hear my Prayer\, O Lord\, peace in Komm\, Jesu\, komm\, the eternal light in Canticum calamitatis maritimae\, or the sacred and the earthly announced by church bells in En Ego Campana. \nEven the meaning – or the absence of it – in Hymn of Acxiom can be interpreted in light of what God gives to humankind. The dual meaning is also present in the Son of Man\, the theme of Komm\, Jesu\, komm\, opening the way for an alternative reading of the concert’s title. \n  \nS:t Jacobs Vokalensemble\nMikael Wedar conductor \nProgramme\nJan Sandström Vuojnha Biegga\nHenry Purcell/Sven-David Sandström Hear my prayer\nSven-David Sandström Komm\, Jesu\, komm\nJaakko Mäntyjärvi Canticum calamitatis maritimae\nVienna Teng arr. SUMMARY:What is life?
DESCRIPTION:What is life? That question is explored in this multifaceted programme\, in which each work offers its own unique interpretation. Ann-Sofi Söderberg’s What is life? opens a space for reflection on the meaning of existence. Sven-Eric Johanson’s Snabbt jagar stormen våra år captures the fleeting passage of time and change. Ingvar Lidholm’s De profundis delves deeply into the human struggle for understanding\, while Gösta Nystroem’s Säg mig du seeks connection and empathy. Max Reger’s intense Der Mensch lebt und bestehtexpresses the complexity of human life\, and Paul Mealor’s Ubi caritas et amor celebrates love as life’s foundation. SUMMARY:The sorrowful mother
DESCRIPTION:Since 2022\, a close collaboration has been underway between the Cathedral Parish of Stockholm and the School of Music and Opera at Mälardalen University. In this concert\, we meet some of their singers in a programme built around the hymn Stabat mater. \nStabat mater was written in the early 14th century and reflects on Mary’s suffering at the crucifixion of Jesus. The text falls into three distinct sections: the first concerns contemplation\, the second empathy\, and the third the call to translate emotion into action. The poem has fascinated composers through the centuries. \nGiovanni Battista Pergolesi was only 26 and dying of tuberculosis when he composed his Stabat mater\, which nearly 300 years later remains a beloved staple in churches around the world. Less well known\, but equally exquisite\, is cello master Luigi Boccherini’s intimate version for soloists and chamber ensemble from 1781. Lennox Berkeley’s Stabat mater was written in 1947 for a concert tour with his close friend Benjamin Britten’s English Opera Group\, scored for six solo voices and twelve instrumentalists. \nSingers and accompanist from the School of Music and Opera at Mälardalen University \nFrom the programmeStabat Mater with music by Lennox Berkeley\, Giovanni Battista Pergolesi and Luigi Boccherini among others.\n \n\n\nAge limit: 6 years and older\n\nFree admission \n\n\nPlease note that large bags\, backpacks\, suitcases\, and strollers are not allowed in the church! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow do I get there?\n\n\n\n \nStorkyrkan – Stockholm Cathedral is situated in Old Town just beside the Royal Castle. SUMMARY:The Face of Love
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, 15 February marks the Sunday before Lent\, whose theme is “The Way of Love\,” and the day before is celebrated as Valentine’s Day. The biblical concept of love and the Greek distinctions between Eros\, Agape\, and Philia form the starting point as S:t Jacob’s Chamber Choir performs under guest conductor Cecilia Martin-Löf. The programme includes movements from Hubert Parry’s Songs of Farewell\, where romantic harmonic beauty meets existential yearning\, and Georgy Vasilevich Sviridov’s Sacred Love from Three Choruses\, in which melodic simplicity carries the spiritual depth of the Russian choral tradition. \nA premiere by Michael Waldenby is interwoven with excerpts from Le Cantique des Cantiques by Daniel-Lesur\, a setting of the Song of Songs in which love symbolizes both human tenderness and divine union – a musical meditation on the way of love. \nCecilia Martin-Löf is head of choral activities at Lund University and its music centre\, Odeum\, and artistic director of the Lund Academic Choir and Palaestra Vocal Ensemble. She holds master’s degrees in both choral and orchestral conducting and combines her position with an active career as a freelance conductor\, répétiteur\, and teacher. She is regularly engaged by many of Sweden’s orchestras and choirs\, as well as ensembles in Denmark\, Germany\, and across Europe. \n  \nS:t Jacobs Kammarkör\nCecilia Martin-Löf guest conductor \nfrom the programme\nMichael Waldenby Dagen svalnar  world premiere\nJean Yves Daniel-Lesur from Le Cantique des Cantiques\nHubert Parry from Songs of Farewell\nGeorgy Vasilevich Sviridov Sacred Love ur Three Choruses \n  \nAge limit: 6 years and older \nTicket prices: 170 SEK\, discounts available for seniors\, children/youth/students \nPlease note that large bags\, backpacks\, suitcases\, and strollers are not allowed in the church! \nBUY YOUR TICKETS HERE!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow do I get there?\n\n\n\nStorkyrkan – Stockholm Cathedral is situated in Old Town just beside the Royal Castle. SUMMARY:Evensong
\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow do I get there?\n\n\n\n\nStorkyrkan – Stockholm Cathedral is situated in Old Town just beside the Royal Castle. SUMMARY:Winterreise
DESCRIPTION:“I prefer these songs to any of my other ones\, and you will come to like them too.” So said Franz Schubert to his friends\, who had just heard him sing Winterreise for the first time\, accompanying himself at the piano. The speechless friends sensed that they had witnessed a kind of farewell – and Schubert would have less than a year left to live. The twenty-four strange\, sorrowful\, and multifaceted songs would later become a cornerstone of the song repertoire – though difficult to grasp for those who first heard them. The singer gives voice to a solitary traveller in a desolate winter landscape that mirrors his inner desolation – lonely\, forsaken\, and lost. The piano part comments on and supports the shifting states of mind and emotion. \nHarry Martinson\, in Vägen ut (1936)\, wrote something that could well summarise Winterreise: “Here and there lay a village\, but otherwise the road passed through forests of dark and ancient fir trees – no life\, only the melancholy sighing of the trees. He recalls the escape vine – the movable liana with which he might swing from tree to tree – if… if…” \nCarl Unander-Scharin tenor\nMattias Wager piano \nProgram\nFranz Schubert Winterreise \nAge limit: 6 years and older\nFree admission\nPlease note that large bags\, backpacks\, suitcases\, and strollers are not allowed in the church! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow do I get there?\n\n\n\n\nStorkyrkan – Stockholm Cathedral is situated in Old Town just beside the Royal Castle. SUMMARY:Yes\, We Love This Country | Jubilate
DESCRIPTION:This year’s church music festival in the Diocese of Stockholm – Jubilate – highlights contemporary Norwegian sacred music by some of the country’s most significant composers. Inspired by the vastness of the sea\, Petra Bjørkhaug has written the heartfelt Messa di Pentecoste\, in which the *Sanctus* and *Agnus Dei* are performed with profound sincerity. Knut Nystedt\, a pioneer of Norwegian choral music\, is represented by the jubilant a cappella work Song of Praise and his beautiful arrangement of the folk tune Jesus\, din søte forening å smake. \nAdolf Fredrik’s Church Chamber Choir interprets Torbjørn Dyrud’s While we war against ourselves\, an intense work expressing human conflict through richly layered sonorities. Gustavsberg Vocal Ensemble performs Kim André Arnesen’s acclaimed Even when he is silent\, set to a World War II text about faith\, hope\, and love even in their apparent absence. S:t Matteus Chamber Choir concludes with Arnesen’s Infinity and Tord Kalvenes’s meditative Kyrie. \nJubilate in the Diocese of Stockholm offers an evening where contemporary Norwegian music brings both strength and hope. \nSt. Matthew Chamber Choir\nEspen Myklebust Olsen conductor\nAdolf Fredrik Church Chamber Choir\nChristoffer Holgersson conductor\nGustavsberg Vocal Ensemble\nHelena Engardt conductor\nMattias Wager piano and organ \nPetra Bjørkhaug Sanctus & Agnus Dei ur Messa di Pentecoste\nKnut Nystedt Song of Praise\narr Knut Nystedt Jesus\, din søte forening å smake\nTorbjørn Dyrud While we war against ourselves\nKim André Arnesen Do not neglect\, What is peace\, Even when he is silent & Inifinity\nTord Kalvenes Kyrie ur Missa de lumine \nAge limit: 6 years and older\nFree admission \n \nPlease note that large bags\, backpacks\, suitcases\, and strollers are not allowed in the church! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow do I get there?\n\n\n\nStorkyrkan – Stockholm Cathedral is situated in Old Town just beside the Royal Castle. SUMMARY:Evensong | Jubilate
DESCRIPTION:A visit to an English cathedral or college chapel to experience Evensong is like stepping into another time and world. As evening calm descends\, the space fills with powerful choral singing that\, together with the sound of the organ\, carries the ancient liturgy through the magnificent acoustics. Beneath soaring vaults and grand windows\, an almost breathless stillness arises\, offering both worshippers and visitors a moment to reflect and rest in a sacred space\, enveloped by the power of music and the beauty of words. This moment of contemplation and togetherness\, free from the noise of daily life\, has contributed to Evensong’s renewed popularity in England. \nThis year’s Evensong is part of the Diocese of Stockholm’s church music festival Jubilate\, which this year focuses on Norwegian music – with several of the evening’s composers in attendance. \nThe service is sung by the Royal College of Music Chamber Choir. During the evening\, the annual Saint Cecilia Award will also be presented – an award that promotes church music in the Diocese of Stockholm. All of this makes the Evensong a solemn and memorable musical experience\, part of a tradition that both honours history and builds bridges to new listeners. \nRoyal College of Music Chamber Choir\nMats Nilsson conductor\nJohan Hammarström & Mattias Wager organ\nSabina Koij liturgist\nBishop Andreas Holmberg \n  \nur programmet\nPetra Bjørkhaug Da pacem\, Domine\nTorbjørn Dyrud Till ingång och växelsångsböner\nKim André Arnesen Bragernes Canticles\narr. SUMMARY:Boys’ Choir Under the Vault
DESCRIPTION:Since 2023\, the boys’ and men’s choirs from the nation’s cathedrals have gathered once a year\, around Candlemas (or\, as this year\, the weekend before)\, for the joint singing event “Boys’ Choir under the Vaults.” The purpose of the gathering is to get to know one another\, to strengthen and inspire\, and to discover both the similarities and the unique circumstances that shape choir life in a cathedral. \nThis year’s program is inspired by the “architecture” of the church year – its shifting interplay of light and darkness\, death and resurrection\, from Advent and Christmas through Lent and toward Easter. The repertoire ranges from Bernstein’s swinging setting of Psalm 100 to Howells’s beautiful interpretation of the text “As the hart longs for the water brooks\, so longs my soul for thee\, O God.” \nBritten’s youthful work A Hymn to the Virgin is a carol often heard at the Anglican Christmas service A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols. Of Bach’s Cantata No. 50\, only one movement survives – a brief\, double-chorus masterpiece with a text from the Book of Revelation: “Now is come salvation\, and strength\, and the kingdom of our God.” \n  \nStorkyrkan Boys’ Choir\, Uppsala Cathedral Boys’ Choir\, Västerås Cathedral Boys’ Choir\, Lund Cathedral Boys’ Choir\, and Gothenburg Cathedral Boys’ ChoirMargareta Raab\, David Johansson\, Susannah Carlsson\, Mattias Eklund\, Petter Ekberg\, and Gregory Lloyd — conductors and organists \nfrom the programme:\nCharles Wood Hail Gladdening Light\nHerbert Howells Like as the Hart Desireth the Waterbrooks\nErnest Walker I Will Lift up Mine Eyes\nLeonard Bernstein Chichester Psalms nr 1 Urah\, hanevel!\nBenjamin Britten Hymn to the Virgin\nRalph Vaughan Williams The Call och Antiphon ur Five Mystical Songs\nJohann Sebastian Bach Nun ist das Heil und die Kraft \nAge limit: 6 years and older\nFree admission \nPlease note that large bags\, backpacks\, suitcases\, and strollers are not allowed in the church! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow do I get there?\n\n\n\nStorkyrkan – Stockholm Cathedral is situated in Old Town just beside the Royal Castle. SUMMARY:Quartet for the End of Time
DESCRIPTION:Listening to Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time in Storkyrkan on Holocaust Memorial Day is an experience marked by both historical memory and spiritual presence. The work was composed during the darkest years of the war\, when Messiaen\, a prisoner of war in Stalag VIII A in Görlitz\, met three fellow musicians – a violinist\, a cellist\, and a clarinetist. With himself at the piano\, he wrote a quartet that was premiered before 400 prisoners and guards on January 15\, 1941. Messiaen later recalled that no audience had ever listened with such concentration. \nThe piece draws its inspiration from the tenth chapter of the Book of Revelation\, where the angel proclaims that “there shall be time no longer.” The music unites visions of eternity and stillness with an almost ecstatic richness of color\, characteristic of Messiaen’s musical language. \nIn the space of Storkyrkan\, this work gains even greater resonance: a testimony to the power of creation in the midst of human suffering\, and a reminder of hope\, faith\, and spiritual endurance. On this memorial day\, it resonates as a musical meditation on both the wounds of history and the light that\, against all odds\, continues to shine through the darkness. \n  \nTale Olsson violin\nUlrika Edström cello\nStefan Harg clarinet\nMats Jansson piano\nMattias Wager organ\nKristina Ljunggren narrator\nBjörn Wiman & Sylvain Briens speakers \nur programmet\nOlivier Messiaen Quatuor pour la fin du Temps\nOlivier Messiaen Les mains de l’abîme ur Livre d’orgue \nAge limit: 6 years and older\nTicket prices: 180 SEK (unreserved seating)\, discounts available for seniors\, children/youth/students \nPlease note that large bags\, backpacks\, suitcases\, and strollers are not allowed in the church! \nBUY YOUR TICKETS HERE!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow do I get there?\n\n\n\nStorkyrkan – Stockholm Cathedral is situated in Old Town just beside the Royal Castle.
