SUMMARY:The Face of Love
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, 15 February marks the Sunday before Lent\, whose theme is “The Way of Love\,” and the day before is celebrated as Valentine’s Day. The biblical concept of love and the Greek distinctions between Eros\, Agape\, and Philia form the starting point as S:t Jacob’s Chamber Choir performs under guest conductor Cecilia Martin-Löf. The programme includes movements from Hubert Parry’s Songs of Farewell\, where romantic harmonic beauty meets existential yearning\, and Georgy Vasilevich Sviridov’s Sacred Love from Three Choruses\, in which melodic simplicity carries the spiritual depth of the Russian choral tradition. \nA premiere by Michael Waldenby is interwoven with excerpts from Le Cantique des Cantiques by Daniel-Lesur\, a setting of the Song of Songs in which love symbolizes both human tenderness and divine union – a musical meditation on the way of love. \nCecilia Martin-Löf is head of choral activities at Lund University and its music centre\, Odeum\, and artistic director of the Lund Academic Choir and Palaestra Vocal Ensemble. She holds master’s degrees in both choral and orchestral conducting and combines her position with an active career as a freelance conductor\, répétiteur\, and teacher. She is regularly engaged by many of Sweden’s orchestras and choirs\, as well as ensembles in Denmark\, Germany\, and across Europe. \n  \nS:t Jacobs Kammarkör\nCecilia Martin-Löf guest conductor \nfrom the programme\nMichael Waldenby Dagen svalnar  world premiere\nJean Yves Daniel-Lesur from Le Cantique des Cantiques\nHubert Parry from Songs of Farewell\nGeorgy Vasilevich Sviridov Sacred Love ur Three Choruses \n  \nAge limit: 6 years and older \nTicket prices: 170 SEK\, discounts available for seniors\, children/youth/students \nPlease note that large bags\, backpacks\, suitcases\, and strollers are not allowed in the church! \nBUY YOUR TICKETS HERE!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow do I get there?\n\n\n\nStorkyrkan – Stockholm Cathedral is situated in Old Town just beside the Royal Castle. SUMMARY:The sorrowful mother
DESCRIPTION:Since 2022\, a close collaboration has been underway between the Cathedral Parish of Stockholm and the School of Music and Opera at Mälardalen University. In this concert\, we meet some of their singers in a programme built around the hymn Stabat mater. \nStabat mater was written in the early 14th century and reflects on Mary’s suffering at the crucifixion of Jesus. The text falls into three distinct sections: the first concerns contemplation\, the second empathy\, and the third the call to translate emotion into action. The poem has fascinated composers through the centuries. \nGiovanni Battista Pergolesi was only 26 and dying of tuberculosis when he composed his Stabat mater\, which nearly 300 years later remains a beloved staple in churches around the world. Less well known\, but equally exquisite\, is cello master Luigi Boccherini’s intimate version for soloists and chamber ensemble from 1781. Lennox Berkeley’s Stabat mater was written in 1947 for a concert tour with his close friend Benjamin Britten’s English Opera Group\, scored for six solo voices and twelve instrumentalists. \nSingers and accompanist from the School of Music and Opera at Mälardalen University \nFrom the programmeStabat Mater with music by Lennox Berkeley\, Giovanni Battista Pergolesi and Luigi Boccherini among others.\n \n\n\nAge limit: 6 years and older\n\nFree admission \n\n\nPlease note that large bags\, backpacks\, suitcases\, and strollers are not allowed in the church! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow do I get there?\n\n\n\n \nStorkyrkan – Stockholm Cathedral is situated in Old Town just beside the Royal Castle. SUMMARY:What is life?
DESCRIPTION:What is life? That question is explored in this multifaceted programme\, in which each work offers its own unique interpretation. Ann-Sofi Söderberg’s What is life? opens a space for reflection on the meaning of existence. Sven-Eric Johanson’s Snabbt jagar stormen våra år captures the fleeting passage of time and change. Ingvar Lidholm’s De profundis delves deeply into the human struggle for understanding\, while Gösta Nystroem’s Säg mig du seeks connection and empathy. Max Reger’s intense Der Mensch lebt und bestehtexpresses the complexity of human life\, and Paul Mealor’s Ubi caritas et amor celebrates love as life’s foundation. Caroline Shaw’s poetic and the swallow evokes hope and renewal\, while Alvin Vikman’s Lost hopeportrays life’s darker moments. Together\, these works form a profound musical meditation on the nature of life. \nStorkyrkans Kammarkör\nHelene Stureborg conductor \nProgramme\nAnn-Sofi Söderberg What is life?\nSven-Eric Johanson Snabbt jagar stormen våra år\nIngvar Lidholm De profundis\nGösta Nystroem Säg mig du\nMax Reger Der Mensch lebt und besteht\nPaul Mealor Ubi caritas et amor\nCaroline Shaw and the swallow\nAlvin Vikman Lost hope \n\n\n  \nAge limit: 6 years and older\n\nTicket prices: 170 SEK\, discounts available for seniors\, children/youth/students \n\n\nPlease note that large bags\, backpacks\, suitcases\, and strollers are not allowed in the church! \n\n\nBUY YOUR TICKETS HERE!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow do I get there?\n\n\n\n\n\nStorkyrkan – Stockholm Cathedral is situated in Old Town just beside the Royal Castle. SUMMARY:From God to Human
DESCRIPTION:The title of the concert alludes to a recurring theme in several of the works: humanity receiving something from God – through prayer\, worship\, or reflection. That “something” can take many forms: the wind and the Holy Spirit in Vuojnha Biegga\, trust in Hear my Prayer\, O Lord\, peace in Komm\, Jesu\, komm\, the eternal light in Canticum calamitatis maritimae\, or the sacred and the earthly announced by church bells in En Ego Campana. \nEven the meaning – or the absence of it – in Hymn of Acxiom can be interpreted in light of what God gives to humankind. The dual meaning is also present in the Son of Man\, the theme of Komm\, Jesu\, komm\, opening the way for an alternative reading of the concert’s title. \n  \nS:t Jacobs Vokalensemble\nMikael Wedar conductor \nProgramme\nJan Sandström Vuojnha Biegga\nHenry Purcell/Sven-David Sandström Hear my prayer\nSven-David Sandström Komm\, Jesu\, komm\nJaakko Mäntyjärvi Canticum calamitatis maritimae\nVienna Teng arr. SUMMARY:The Apology
DESCRIPTION:The Apology – Sii bivde ándagassii is a staged work created in response to the High Mass at which Archbishop Antje Jackelén apologized for the Church of Sweden’s role in the colonisation of the Sámi people. After seeing the televised service\, Åsa Simma\, director of the Giron Sámi Teáhter\, was inspired to create a total work of art where history\, collective pain\, and hope meet within the ritual space of the theatre. \nThe performance highlights the Sámi people’s loss of land\, language\, and culture\, as well as the need for redress and deeper dialogue. To the powerful organ compositions of Hans-Ola Ericsson\, percussion\, quiet joik\, storytelling\, newly written dialogues\, and visually striking stage imagery\, words\, music\, movement\, and the artistry of Britta Marakatt-Labba are woven together into one whole. The Apology invites the audience into a shared process of reflection\, memory\, and reconciliation – with each performance leaving its imprint on both the individual and the community. \nThe Apology premiered in Uppsala Cathedral in the autumn of 2025 and will subsequently tour cathedrals across Sweden. The production is a collaboration with Estrad Norr. \nMarja Utsi\, Cecilia Persson & Åsa Simma actors\nÅsa Simma and Kjell Peder Johanson script\nKjell Peder Johanson och Indra Lorentzen direction\nIndra Lorentzen choreography\nHans-Ola Ericsson composer\, organist\nTommy Björk percussion\nBritta Marakatt-Labba visual art\nSara Svonni costume\nAgneta Enzell set design\nCaisa Jackson makeup design\nEmanuel Arvanitis lighting design \n  \nAge limit: 6 years and older \nFree admission \nPlease note that large bags\, backpacks\, suitcases\, and strollers are not allowed in the church! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow do I get there?\n\n\n\nStorkyrkan – Stockholm Cathedral is situated in Old Town just beside the Royal Castle. SUMMARY:J.S. Bach St John Passion
DESCRIPTION:S:t Jacobs Kammarkör\nKarl-Magnus Fredriksson Christ\nLars Johansson Brissman Pilate\nCarl Unander-Scharin Evangelist\nIda Zackrisson Soprano\nAnna Zander Alto\nOrfeus barock Stockholm\nElin Gabrielsson Concertmaster\nGary Graden Conductor \nProgram\nJohann Sebastian Bach St John Passion BWV 245 \nWelcome to a powerful musical experience as S:t Jacob’s Chamber Choir performs one of the most significant works in Western music history – Johann Sebastian Bach’s St John Passion. \nThe St John Passion was first performed on Good Friday\, 7 April 1724\, in Leipzig. It was the first Passion Bach composed after assuming his post as Cantor at St Thomas Church\, marking a new chapter in his career. The work is based on the evangelist John’s account of the suffering and death of Christ and stands out for its dramatic intensity and emotional immediacy. \nMusically\, the work alternates between dramatic choruses\, heartfelt arias\, and recitatives that narrate the Passion story. Hear the mournfully beautiful alto aria Es ist vollbracht (“It is finished”)\, the tender prayer of Ich folge dir gleichfalls (“I follow thee with joyful steps”)\, and the deeply moving Zerfließe\, mein Herze (“Dissolve\, my heart\, in floods of tears”). The St John Passion is a musical journey that moves from darkness to light\, from suffering to hope. Bach’s unique ability to convey the emotional and theological depth of the text through music finds full expression here – from the fury of the crowd’s cries to the profound stillness of the closing movements. \nIt promises a deeply moving concert experience that will linger long after the final note has faded. \n  \nAge limit: 6 years and older \nTicket prices: 110-395 SEK\, discounts available for seniors\, children/youth/students \n\n\nPlease note that large bags\, backpacks\, suitcases\, and strollers are not allowed in the church! \n\n\n  \n\n\nBUY YOUR TICKETS HERE!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow do I get there?\n\n\n\n\n\nStorkyrkan – Stockholm Cathedral is situated in Old Town just beside the Royal Castle. SUMMARY:Visionary Soundscapes | Svensk musikvår
DESCRIPTION:When Svensk Musikvår – the annual festival for contemporary art music – returns to Storkyrkan\, it does so with a concert where the Stockholm Saxophone Quartet meets the organ in three entirely new works. The compositions\, commissioned by the festival with support from the Swedish Arts Council and the Helge Ax:son Johnson Foundation\, explore themes of time\, the psyche\, and the depths of existence. \nZacharias Ehnvall’s Window of Tolerance unfolds like an audible wave across the mind – a resonant reflection on the passage of time and the expanses of perception. Paula af Malmborg Ward’s Timestuck is a musical dialogue between organ and saxophones\, a fascinating journey through the paradoxes of time and human consciousness. David Riebe’s Vertigo draws us into the sensation of dizziness and liminality – where sweet and chaotic sonic landscapes meet in the organ’s powerful resonance filling the church space. The saxophonists move freely around the room\, creating a sound that seems to emanate from everywhere and nowhere at once. \nThis concert\, in one of Stockholm’s most historic churches\, becomes a meeting place where contemporary Swedish music reveals its vibrant breadth and distinctive voice. Welcome to experience new sounds and profound expressions at Svensk Musikvår’s festival 2025. \nStockholms saxofonkvartett\nJörgen Pettersson\nLinn Persson Kornhammar\nMathias Karlsen Björnstad\nTheo Hillborg\nMila Ortgies Thoors organ \nfrom the programme\nZacharias Ehnvall Window of Tolerance\nPaula af Malmborg Ward Timestuck\nDavid Riebe Vertigo \nAge limit: 6 years and older \nFree admission \nPlease note that large bags\, backpacks\, suitcases\, and strollers are not allowed in the church! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow do I get there?\n\n\n\nStorkyrkan – Stockholm Cathedral is situated in Old Town just beside the Royal Castle. SUMMARY:The Pioneer’s Passion
DESCRIPTION:The depth of sorrow and the strength of hope meet in Stabat Mater\, first performed in 1890 in the presence of the royal family and dedicated to Crown Prince Gustaf. In nine movements\, the Passion drama is voiced from Mary’s perspective – each movement with its own emotional character. Netzel combines romantic colour with refined choral texture. Among both critics and audiences\, the work was met with great admiration\, and the composer became a pioneer in Swedish musical life\, deeply committed to advancing the role of women in culture and the development of church music. \nWinter’s desolation and resilience stand at the centre of Un soir de neige\, where Paul Éluard’s texts intertwine with Francis Poulenc’s evocative sound world. Snow and cold mirror the fear and flight of people in an occupied Paris\, yet the choral writing also reveals a quiet strength – hope that endures even when all around is still and menacing. \nFrom the same French sacred source\, Litanies à la Vierge Noire draws its tone. The work was written during a pilgrimage to Rocamadour\, where Poulenc’s faith deepened. Modal melodies and the character of an intimate\, folk-like prayer course throughout the piece – expressing personal doubt\, loss\, and humble trust – while the choir’s rich harmonies interact with a Gregorian-inspired organ part. \nRoger-Ducasse is celebrated for his subtlety and craftsmanship. The programme concludes with his Crux fidelis from the collection Trois motets (1912). \nStockholms domkyrkokör\nHenriikka Gröndahl soprano\nMaria Forsström altp\nJoel Annmo tenor\nMarkus Schwartz bass\nMattias Wager organ\nJohan Hammarström conductor \nProgram\nLaura Netzel Stabat mater\nFrancis Poulenc Un soir de Neige\nFrancis Poulenc Litanies à la Vierge Noire\nJean Roger-Ducasse Crux fidelis ur Trois motets \n  \nAge limit: 6 years and older \nTicket prices: 110-305 SEK\, discounts available for seniors\, children/youth/students \nPlease note that large bags\, backpacks\, suitcases\, and strollers are not allowed in the church! \nBUY YOUR TICKETS HERE!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow do I get there?\n\n\n\nStorkyrkan – Stockholm Cathedral is situated in Old Town just beside the Royal Castle. SUMMARY:Stations of the cross
DESCRIPTION:At 3 p.m. on Good Friday – the hour of Jesus’ death – we gather for reflection on life’s deepest questions. For many years\, this occasion has offered a moment of stillness through a poetic and musical journey along the fourteen Stations of the Cross\, the Via Dolorosa. \nIn 1930\, composer and organist Marcel Dupré improvised upon Paul Claudel’s poetic work Le Chemin de la Croix (“The Way of the Cross”) – a series of thought-provoking and profoundly human texts about suffering and reconciliation. These improvisations were later transformed into fourteen musical meditations\, each reflecting the depth and drama of its respective station. \nThrough Stina Ekblad’s interpretation\, Claudel’s poetry is brought to life with immediacy and presence. Dupré’s organ music moves between tender stillness and powerful drama – an emotional journey from deep sorrow to the light of hope. In the meeting of word and sound arises a deeply moving dialogue that leads us along the Way of the Cross with spiritual depth and heartfelt immediacy. \n  \nMattias Wager organ\nStina Ekblad recitation \nProgramme\nMarcel Dupré Le Chemin de la Croix op. 29\nto poems by Paul Claudel \n  \nAge limit: 6 years and older \nFree admission \nPlease note that large bags\, backpacks\, suitcases\, and strollers are not allowed in the church! \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow do I get there?\n\n\n\nStorkyrkan – Stockholm Cathedral is situated in Old Town just beside the Royal Castle. SUMMARY:Festal evensong
DESCRIPTION:Easter Day celebrates the triumph of life over death and light over darkness. It is the greatest feast of the Christian Church\, reminding us of Jesus’ resurrection after the crucifixion – the hope of new life and reconciliation is born in our hearts. Evensong\, through its prayers\, psalms\, and beautiful choral music\, offers a moment of stillness in which this message finds special resonance. \nIn the calm atmosphere of Evensong\, the tradition established in the sixteenth century lives on\, where devotion and music meet to draw us closer to faith and to one another. The music uplifts\, the silence brings peace\, and the words invite reflection in a world that so often rushes ahead. Here\, the joy and solemnity of Easter become a living reality. \nAs The Economist aptly describes it: “The music soars\, the prayers bring peace\, and the congregation departs with renewed strength.” Evensong creates a space for community\, renewal\, and hope that endures long after the evening has ended. \nStockholms domkyrkokör\nMattias Wager organ\nJohan Hammarström conductor\nSabina Koij liturgist \nProgramme\nCharles Wood This joyful Eastertide\nJoanna Forbes L’Estrange Preces and responses\nGeorge Dyson Evening service in D\nCecilia McDowall Easter Light \n  \nAge limit: 6 years and older \nFree admission \nPlease note that large bags\, backpacks\, suitcases\, and strollers are not allowed in the church! \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow do I get there?\n\n\n\nStorkyrkan – Stockholm Cathedral is situated in Old Town just beside the Royal Castle. SUMMARY:MacMillan Seven Last Words of Christ
DESCRIPTION:The music of Seven Last Words from the Cross reflects Sir James MacMillan’s deep roots in Scottish cultural heritage and his strong Catholic faith. His musical language is characterised by rhythmic vitality\, emotional depth\, and influences from Celtic folk traditions interwoven with the Western classical idiom. By blending Gregorian melodies and baroque Passion elements\, he creates a unique sound world where sorrow and consolation intertwine in an intense musical narrative. \nIn this cantata for choir and string orchestra\, the seven last utterances of Jesus on the cross are set in a powerful musical meditation. Each movement alternates between dramatic energy and moments of quiet stillness\, evoking a profound sense of intimacy and reflection. MacMillan’s music combines spiritual depth with artistic innovation\, and his work is internationally recognised as among the most significant contributions to contemporary sacred music. \nSeven Last Words from the Cross is not only a musical masterpiece but also a living testament to MacMillan’s importance in the world of modern art music\, where tradition and the present moment meet in a passionate expression. \n  \nS:t Jacobs Vokalensemble\nOrkester\nMikael Wedar conductor \nProgramme\nJames MacMillan Seven Last Words of Christ \n  \nAge limit: 6 years and older \nTicket prices: 370-100 SEK\, discounts available for seniors\, children/youth/students \nPlease note that large bags\, backpacks\, suitcases\, and strollers are not allowed in the church! \nBUY YOUR TICKETS HERE!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow do I get there?\n\n\n\nStorkyrkan – Stockholm Cathedral is situated in Old Town just beside the Royal Castle. SUMMARY:The Swedish Radio Choir interprets Palestrina
DESCRIPTION:Palestrina’s renowned mass is interwoven with Arvo Pärt’s frequently performed and much-loved motets. The concert marks the conclusion of six years of collaboration between Chief Conductor Kaspars Putniņš and the Swedish Radio Choir. \nGiovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina’s Missa Papae Marcelli (Mass for Pope Marcellus) is a Renaissance masterpiece composed around 1560. It honours the martyred bishop Marcellus I and is characterised by its clear\, balanced polyphony and refined interplay of voices. The work represents a masterful union of spiritual gravity and exquisite craftsmanship. Seen as one of the foremost examples of sacred Renaissance polyphony\, the Marcellus Mass has profoundly influenced later church music—a perfect opportunity to experience the pure\, sacred sound world of the late Italian Renaissance. \nArvo Pärt’s choral works for unaccompanied voices are defined by his signature style—a fusion of minimalism and spiritual clarity. Through simple\, luminous melodies and subtle harmonies\, he creates a meditative\, timeless atmosphere. His motets explore themes of faith\, redemption\, and human vulnerability with profound sincerity\, offering deeply spiritual expressions of reflection and quiet contemplation. \n\nRadiokören\nKaspars Putniņš dirigent \nProgram\nGiovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina Missa Papae Marcelli\nArvo Pärt Nunc dimittis\nArvo Pärt Magnificat\nArvo Pärt Dopo la vittoria\nArvo Pärt The woman with the alabaster box \n  \nAge limit: 6 years and older \nTicket prices: 80-275 SEK\, discounts available for seniors\, children/youth/students \nPlease note that large bags\, backpacks\, suitcases\, and strollers are not allowed in the church! \nTickets are sold at Berwaldhallen. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow do I get there?\n\n\n\n \nStorkyrkan – Stockholm Cathedral is situated in Old Town just beside the Royal Castle.
