DESCRIPTION:The depth of sorrow and the strength of hope meet in Stabat Mater\, first performed in 1890 in the presence of the royal family and dedicated to Crown Prince Gustaf. In nine movements\, the Passion drama is voiced from Mary’s perspective – each movement with its own emotional character. Netzel combines romantic colour with refined choral texture. Among both critics and audiences\, the work was met with great admiration\, and the composer became a pioneer in Swedish musical life\, deeply committed to advancing the role of women in culture and the development of church music. \nWinter’s desolation and resilience stand at the centre of Un soir de neige\, where Paul Éluard’s texts intertwine with Francis Poulenc’s evocative sound world. Snow and cold mirror the fear and flight of people in an occupied Paris\, yet the choral writing also reveals a quiet strength – hope that endures even when all around is still and menacing. \nFrom the same French sacred source\, Litanies à la Vierge Noire draws its tone. The work was written during a pilgrimage to Rocamadour\, where Poulenc’s faith deepened. Modal melodies and the character of an intimate\, folk-like prayer course throughout the piece – expressing personal doubt\, loss\, and humble trust – while the choir’s rich harmonies interact with a Gregorian-inspired organ part. \nRoger-Ducasse is celebrated for his subtlety and craftsmanship. DESCRIPTION:At 3 p.m. on Good Friday – the hour of Jesus’ death – we gather for reflection on life’s deepest questions. For many years\, this occasion has offered a moment of stillness through a poetic and musical journey along the fourteen Stations of the Cross\, the Via Dolorosa. \nIn 1930\, composer and organist Marcel Dupré improvised upon Paul Claudel’s poetic work Le Chemin de la Croix (“The Way of the Cross”) – a series of thought-provoking and profoundly human texts about suffering and reconciliation. These improvisations were later transformed into fourteen musical meditations\, each reflecting the depth and drama of its respective station. \nThrough Stina Ekblad’s interpretation\, Claudel’s poetry is brought to life with immediacy and presence. Dupré’s organ music moves between tender stillness and powerful drama – an emotional journey from deep sorrow to the light of hope. DESCRIPTION:During the Stockholm Culture Night\, the doors of Storkyrkan open to a world of sound. Come and experience the city’s cathedral filled with music\, light\, and presence. Let the tones carry you through history – in the very heart of the Old Town. \nS:t Jacob’s Chamber Choir will present two concerts during the evening under the direction of 25-year-old German guest conductor Maria Ravvina\, winner of the international Fosco Corti Choral Conducting Competition in Turin in October 2024. S:t Jacob’s Chamber Choir took part in the competition as the final-round choir\, and the first prize consisted of conducting a concert with the choir in Stockholm. Maria Ravvina was also awarded a special prize as the youngest finalist in the competition. \nMaria Ravvina is currently pursuing a master’s degree in choral conducting at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts. She is Artistic Director of the Hannover-based vocal ensemble Vox Aeterna\, which won several prizes at the major German choral festival Deutsches Chorfest 2025\, where around 14\,000 singers from more than 400 choirs gathered. The programme includes both newly composed and well-known repertoire – a spring-inspired mix full of life and renewal. \nChamber music is a multifaceted genre\, typically performed by small ensembles of two to ten musicians\, though sometimes more. Its distinctive quality lies in the close collaboration between performers. Each instrument plays a vital role and contributes to the whole\, requiring communication\, sensitivity\, and mutual respect. At the School of Music in Västerås\, students are encouraged to explore this collaborative artistry while also developing their individual instrumental or vocal mastery – both essential for performing at a high professional level. The curriculum alternates between solo and chamber performance\, offering varied perspectives on musical expression. \nSince 2022\, there has been a close collaboration between Stockholm Cathedral Parish and the School of Music and Opera at Mälardalen University. Karl Jenkins’ distinctive style blends classical choral grandeur with ethnic colour in Exsultate\, jubilate and Ave Maria from Adiemus – Songs of Sanctuary. DESCRIPTION:Lars-Erik Larsson’s Förklädd gud (A God Disguised) is a beloved Swedish classic – a favourite of many\, including His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf. The text\, written by Hjalmar Gullberg during the troubled 1930s\, captures themes of hope\, compassion\, and human dignity. Gullberg drew inspiration from the myth of the god Apollo\, who walks among mortals in disguise – an allegory of the divine presence that exists unseen among us. The work also serves as a protest against oppression and exclusion\, with a clear link to the threats facing Europe’s Jewish population at the time. \nFörklädd gud was first performed in 1940 on Swedish Radio\, under the looming shadow of the Second World War. The music alternates between playfulness\, warmth\, and solemn reflection\, conveying with great sensitivity the invisible divinity within every human being. DESCRIPTION:Storkyrkan welcomes choirs from Denmark and Norway\, who together with S:t Jacob’s Vocal Ensemble present a programme where early music is brought to new life through contemporary interpretations. \nThe audience will experience Nordic soundscapes in the meeting of tradition and renewal. The choirs join forces in the monumental work Hear My Prayer\, O Lord\, where Sandström unfolds Purcell’s music into vast\, shimmering fields of sound. \nAkademisk Kor Århus\, founded in 1985 and conducted by Jonas Rasmussen\, is considered one of Denmark’s leading amateur choirs. It consists of young singers connected to the musical life of Aarhus. With international tours and several first prizes from prestigious competitions\, the choir has become a strong voice in European choral culture. It is especially dedicated to preserving and renewing the Danish choral tradition through commissioned works and recordings. \nSchola Cantorum\, founded in 1964 by composer Knut Nystedt\, is regarded today as one of Norway’s foremost chamber choirs. Affiliated with the University of Oslo\, the ensemble is made up of young singers from the country’s leading music academies.
