Music for Violin and Cello
2 November @ 14:00 - 15:00
FreeOn the Saturday when autumn seems darkest – the one that falls between October 31 and November 6 – All Saints’ Day is celebrated. Originally, this was a day dedicated to the saints, “God’s little sunbeams, those who do not shine by themselves, but radiate God’s light,” as a wise priest once put it.
In Sweden, the entire All Saints’ weekend has become a time for reflection and light. It is a time when sorrow, memories, and longing are given space in both our souls and church rooms. We visit cemeteries, light candles for our loved ones, gather for memorial services, and are reminded by biblical texts of the hope of life after death. In these rituals, music plays an important role. With music, we have the opportunity to pause in feelings and contemplation. In sounds, melodies, and lyrics, we can find comfort. In music, we meet in wordless communion.
When the young musicians Lovisa Ehrenkrona, educated in Oslo, Lucerne, and Amsterdam, and Filip Graden, who is currently pursuing his master’s at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, meet in Storkyrkan, they present a program where Henrik Strindberg’s sensitive piece *The Fifth String* for violin, composed in 2009, is set against Arthur Honegger’s at times very energetic *Sonatine* for violin and cello from 1932, as well as George Crumb’s avant-garde *Sonata* for solo cello from 1955.
