Victor Sjöström’s silent movie The Phantom Carriage was premièred in 1921, and won instant recognition for its psychological realism and creative use of new techniques such as double exposure. The film has had great impact on filmmakers ever since, among them Ingmar Bergman, who watched it once every year throughout his life.

Based on a novel by Selma Lagerlöf, it tells the story of drunkard David Holm who is tasked by Death to drive around in the Phantom Carriage to pick up the souls of the departed. David Holm is thus forced to face the consequences of his irresponsible living, and to see all the harm he has done.

Silent movies were showed in theatres accompanied by live orchestra or improvised organ music. In today’s event, the film is showed accompanied by Mattias Wager improvising on the Cathedral organ.
