Ukssarájgiesne – In the Doorway
2 February @ 16:00 - 17:00
Free
In the performance Ukssarájgiesne (In the Doorway), Karin Gunilla Bonta combines old and new joiks with poetry, quotes, and stories. The starting point of the performance is a hidden and forgotten Sámi family history from the early 20th century that has previously been silenced. The title refers to a door that was once closed but is now slightly ajar.
The story has connections to the 1913 reform of nomadic schools, which in the performance is placed in the context of the time, with priests and authors who supported racial biology.
The performance seeks to highlight this issue and explores the consequences it has had for families that gave up their language, culture, and eventually came to deny their origins.
The performance Ukssarájgiesne (In the Doorway) features Karin Gunilla Bonta and flutist Jonas Simonson. Karin Gunilla Bonta, more commonly known as Karin Nelson, is a distinguished organist, improvisational musician, and professor. Jonas Simonson is an innovative musician in world music and improvisational music, and also works as a professor of musical interpretation.
