Winterreise
9 February @ 16:00 - 17:10
Free
I like these songs better than any of the others, and you will also like them. So said Franz Schubert to his friends who had heard him sing Winterreise to his own piano playing for the first time. The stunned friends sensed that they were witnessing a kind of farewell – and Schubert would have just under a year left to live. The twenty-four strange, sad, and multifaceted songs would later establish themselves as a landmark work for singers – but it was difficult to comprehend for those who heard it for the very first time. The singer gives voice to a lone traveler in a barren winter landscape, which also mirrors his vulnerability – alone, abandoned, and lost. The piano part comments on and supports the emotional states and moods.
Harry Martinsson writes in Vägen ut (The Road Out) from 1936 something that could summarize Winterreise: Only here and there lay a village; otherwise, the road went through forests of dark and ancient giant firs – no life, just the melancholy rustling of the fir trees. He recalls the escape hook – the movable vine he would swing from tree to tree – in case – in case…
