Evening Porch to Eternity
6 October @ 16:00 - 17:00
180SEKThe relationship between humans and the Earth, along with the profound questions of life and death, forms the theme of S:t Jacob’s Vocal Ensemble’s autumn concert.
Sofia Söderberg’s interpretation of the Lord’s Prayer – Mother Earth – serves as a reminder of the shared responsibility we all have for our planet. Martin Åsander brings a nature-lyrical glow to his setting of Pär Lagerqvist’s existential poem Evening Porch to Eternity from 2016. Frank Martin composed his Mass for Double Choir in 1922 as a personal reckoning between himself and God. The five movements – Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Agnus Dei – were not initially intended for performance, but with their exquisite voice-leading and harmonics, the work has gone down in history as groundbreaking and has become a modern classic since its premiere in 1963.
Karin Rehnqvist’s Haya! is a song of joy for the day, performed in the newly invented language of Hayanska. At the end, a few lines are whispered in English, taken from Native American poetry: “The morning star is up. I cross the mountains into the light of the sea.”
Henrik Dahlgren’s choral work The Butcher’s Boy is originally an American folk song about unhappy love, infidelity, and death. The piece premiered in Aberdeen in 2023 and had its Swedish premiere this spring with S:t Jacob’s Vocal Ensemble.
