In the Beginning

13 October @ 16:00 - 17:00

100SEK – 290SEK

When Matthew Peterson composed In the Beginning in 2020 for choir and saxophone quartet, it was dedicated to the memory of Sven-David Sandström, who was Peterson’s composition teacher at Indiana University. The text, taken from the Gospel of John, testifies to the victory of light over darkness. Musically, the composer pays tribute to his former teacher by encapsulating two important aspects of Sven-David’s music that inspired him: the meticulous craftsmanship and the emotional depth.

Before the Second World War, there was a large proportion of Swedes in western Estonia, and to this day, there are villages and small towns that bear Swedish names. The texts for Tõnu Kõrvits’ Hymns from the Western Coast are taken from the book Estlandssvenska folkliga koraler and are written in Swedish as it is spoken in Estonia, which may make some linguistic expressions sound archaic to native Swedes.

Psalm 137 Super flumina Babylonis, also known as By the Rivers of Babylon, has inspired many composers, including Camille Saint-Saëns. In his setting, composed in 1854 but only rediscovered and published in 2021, he lives up to his reputation as an innovative composer by writing sacred music for the saxophone just a few years after the instrument was invented.
