Advent Concert SOLD OUT

7 December @ 16:00 - 17:00

100kr – 290kr

As the winter darkness descends, we need more than ever to come together in a spirit of community. Gingerbread baking and saffron buns, Christmas markets and mulled wine, stars and candles are just a few of the ingredients that make Christmas what it is. And what would Advent and Christmas be without music?

At this time of year, the familiar tunes of Christmas are played on repeat through the loudspeakers of department stores. They also resonate in churches and concert halls across the country—performed by diverse children’s choirs, joyful amateurs, and skilled musicians alike. Drums, trumpets, singing, and joy. In the music, we find comfort and, hopefully, discover the true message of Christmas, the one that lies beyond the rush.

When the new generation of choir singers ushers in Advent, the classic Advent hymns are on the repertoire. The Swedish composer and organist at Gustav Vasa Church, Otto Olsson, composed over 70 choral songs, of which “Advent” from 1919 is still sung in almost every Swedish church during Advent. Abbé Vogler’s grand “Hosanna” from 1795 is also a staple, as is the Dalarna hymn “Prepare the Way, O Zion.” Almost everyone lights up a little extra to “A Thousand Christmas Candles Are Lit,” the beloved song written as early as 1898 by composer and teacher Emmy Köhler. The medieval Christmas song “Audete, Gaude” swings heartily in Ward Swingle’s eight-part arrangement.
