Olivier Messiaen Vingt Regards sur l’Enfant-Jésus

Carl-Axel Dominique is regarded as one of the world’s foremost interpreters of the French composer Olivier Messiaen’s ecstatically visionary piano music. The annual Christmas Day performance of “Twenty Contemplations on the Infant Jesus,” which he has held for decades at the Great Church (Storkyrkan), is a living institution in Stockholm’s musical life. Messiaen meditates on the Infant Jesus with a range of expression from stillness to ecstasy, from the breathlessly ethereal to the most powerful outbursts of joy.

After Dominique first performed all twenty movements of the work in the early 1980s, he received a letter from the composer himself, inviting him to Paris to study Messiaen’s piano works with him. The visit resulted in a collaboration lasting over ten years and several trips to Paris. Olivier Messiaen himself was deeply moved by Dominique’s interpretations:

“I always think back with joy to the time when Carl-Axel Dominique visited me to play ‘Twenty Contemplations on the Infant Jesus.’ It was a great experience to hear such a magnificent pianist interpret my work, with such wonderful technique and such varied coloring.”
