Event Series Event Series: G.F. Handel Messiah

G.F. Handel Messiah

1 December @ 16:00 - 19:00

100kr – 370kr

George Frideric Handel’s magnificent oratorio, Messiah, is among the world’s most renowned and frequently performed works, featuring a series of splendid choruses and exquisite arias. The text of this brilliant Baroque composition is drawn from the Bible and depicts the vision of the Messiah’s arrival and the salvation of humanity. The work was composed in just three weeks and was first performed in 1742 at a charity concert in Dublin, where it achieved immediate success.**

Handel himself revised the work several times, and in the 1780s, Mozart re-arranged the music. Over time, Messiah captivated the entire world, and by the 19th century, it became a well-established Christmas tradition in Sweden, with the rousing Hallelujah Chorus in particular ensuring a guaranteed festive atmosphere.

The Royal Theatre initiated Storkyrkan’s Messiah tradition in 1928. In 1977, Storkyrkan’s choir, along with members of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, took over the tradition, continuing it until 2010. Today, we perform Messiah with both the solemnity and the playful musicianship that characterised Handel and his era. For 97 years, Messiah has resonated under the vaults of Storkyrkan.
