W.A. Mozart Requiem
17 November @ 15:00 - 16:10
100SEK – 290SEKThe creation of Mozart’s divinely beautiful Requiem is shrouded in mystery. The composer was in poor health when, in July 1791, he was approached by an “unknown grey stranger” who wished to commission a mass for the dead on behalf of his employer. Mozart threw himself into the task with great fervour, but when he passed away in early December of that same year, the work remained unfinished. Missing were parts of the Lacrimosa, Sanctus, Benedictus, and Agnus Dei. The orchestration was also incomplete in several sections. Mozart’s widow, Constanze, asked Joseph von Eybler to complete the score, but apart from orchestrating the music after the Kyrie, he passed the task on to Mozart’s pupil, Franz Xaver Süßmayr, who completed the work.
Behind the mysterious commission was Count Franz von Walsegg, who wished for a mass in memory of his late young wife and also hoped to take credit for the composition himself. Eleven years after the count’s death, Mozart’s handwritten original manuscript was discovered among the documents he left behind.
Regardless of who wrote which parts of the Requiem, it remains music that possesses an otherworldly ability to deeply move the listener. And as Beethoven is said to have remarked: “If Mozart did not write the music, then the man who wrote it was a Mozart.”
