Gateway to Norway

Norwegian folk music has inspired the program as the Bergen Cathedral Choir, one of Norway’s leading amateur choirs, visits the Stockholm Cathedral. Music by contemporary composers Marianne Reidarsdatter Eriksen and Ørjan Matre will be heard alongside Edvard Grieg’s Four Hymns, a collection of pieces based on old Norwegian church melodies. Pianist and composer Anne Marie Ørbeck had a close relationship with Norwegian folk music, which is evident in the song ‘Our Country’ (Vårt Land). The concert opens with British composer Herbert Howells’ Requiem, written for a cappella choir and soloists.

Bergen Cathedral Choir is the bearer of a rich church musical heritage and contributes to its renewal by performing music by contemporary composers. The Cathedral Choir, with an extensive concert schedule throughout the year, is based in, Bergen but also regularly tours regionally and internationally. The conductor of the choir since 2009 is Cathedral Cantor Kjetil Almenning, a singer and conductor who has worked with ensembles such as the Norwegian Soloists’ Choir, Barents International Chamber Choir, Eric Ericson’s Chamber Choir, and the Swedish Radio Choir
