Experience the unique Swedish Lucia tradition in the Stockholm Cathedral and S:t Jacob’s Church! Lucia is a cherished tradition with a history as dramatic as it is colorful. Saint Lucia from Syracuse, according to legend, was to be burned at the stake for her Christian faith, but thanks to a miracle, the flames retreated. Another miracle restored her eyesight after she had given her eyes away to an admiring man. All of this, according to legend, happened on December 13th.
The name Lucia derives from the Latin “lux” (light), and in the realm of folk beliefs, Lucia was sometimes associated with Lucifer due to the similarity in sound. There was something supernatural about the figure of Lucia – perhaps she was a mountain spirit who led the beings of Lucia’s night?
The custom of a white-clad Lucia who pays a morning visit was adopted in the late 1700s. At that time, she had angel wings and candlesticks in her hands. At the turn of the previous century, Lucia assumed her current character, and after the First World War, Lucia processions became more common in Sweden. The Lucia song itself originates from Italy and received Swedish lyrics in the 1920s. Since then, Lucia has become a world-renowned Swedish tradition celebrated in schools, churches, and concert halls. For many years now, the Nobel laureates of the year are awakened with song, coffee, gingerbread cookies, white gowns, and lit candles in their hotel rooms.
People make pilgrimages to the Stockholm Cathedral and S:t Jacob’s Church every year to experience Swedish Lucia celebrations at their best. In the glow of the Lucia crown and the living candles, some of Stockholm’s finest children’s and youth choirs sing the beloved songs that belong to the special Swedish tradition of Lucia and St. Stephen’s celebrations.
The Lucia procession makes its entrance, and the light illuminates the deepest darkness. In our unique church spaces – the Stockholm Cathedral with its medieval mystique, or S:t Jacob’s Church with its Baroque splendor – you will have an experience beyond the ordinary.

Doors open 30 minutes before the concert starts. Late entry will not be permitted after the concert begins. Please be aware that restroom facilities are limited.
