Olivier Messiaen Vingt Regards sur l’Enfant-Jésus

Carl-Axel Dominique is recognized as one of the world’s foremost interpreters of Olivier Messiaen’s ecstatically visionary piano music. His annual Christmas Day performance of Twenty Contemplations on the Infant Jesus has become an institution in Stockholm’s musical life. Messiaen meditates on the Christ Child with a range of expression from stillness to ecstasy, from the ethereal to the most powerful outbursts of joy.

After Dominique first performed all twenty movements in the early 1980s, he received a letter from Messiaen himself, inviting him to Paris to study the composer’s piano works. This led to over a decade of collaboration and several visits to Paris. Messiaen was deeply moved by Dominique’s interpretations:

“I always look back with joy on the time when Carl-Axel Dominique visited me to play Twenty Contemplations on the Infant Jesus. It was a great experience to hear such a magnificent pianist interpret my work, with such wonderful technique and such varied color.”
