W. A. Mozart Requiem

19 November, 2023 @ 16:00 - 17:10

100SEK – 290SEK
The origin of Mozart‘s celestial Requiem is shrouded in mystery. The composer was in poor health when in July 1791, he was approached by an “unknown gray stranger” who wanted to commission a requiem mass for his patron. Mozart undertook the task with great fervor, but when he himself passed away at the beginning of December that year, the work remained unfinished. Missing were parts of the Lacrimosa, Sanctus, Benedictus, and Agnus Dei. The orchestration was also incomplete in several places. Mozart‘s widow, Constanze, asked Joseph von Eybler to complete the score, but apart from orchestrating the music after the Kyrie, he passed on the task to Mozart‘s student Franz Xaver Süßmayr, who finished the work.
Behind the mysterious commission was Count Franz von Walsegg, who desired a mass in memory of his departed young wife and also wanted to take credit for the composition. Eleven years after the count’s death, Mozart‘s handwritten original manuscript was discovered among the documents he left behind.

Regardless of who wrote which parts of the Requiem, it is music that still possesses an otherworldly ability to deeply move. As Beethoven is said to have remarked: “If Mozart did not compose the music, then the man who composed it was a Mozart.”
