A God Disguised

Lars-Erik Larsson’s Förklädd gud (A God Disguised) is a beloved Swedish classic – a favourite of many, including His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf. The text, written by Hjalmar Gullberg during the troubled 1930s, captures themes of hope, compassion, and human dignity. Gullberg drew inspiration from the myth of the god Apollo, who walks among mortals in disguise – an allegory of the divine presence that exists unseen among us. The work also serves as a protest against oppression and exclusion, with a clear link to the threats facing Europe’s Jewish population at the time.
Förklädd gud was first performed in 1940 on Swedish Radio, under the looming shadow of the Second World War. The music alternates between playfulness, warmth, and solemn reflection, conveying with great sensitivity the invisible divinity within every human being. With Storkyrkan Chamber Choir, Stockholm Cathedral Choir, orchestra, soloists, and narrator, this concert promises a deeply moving and vivid experience.
The evening is complemented by Swedish spring songs, including works by David Wikander – former organist at Storkyrkan – such as Kung Liljekonvalje and Förvårskväll. This rich tradition of Swedish choral lyricism expresses both melancholy and joy, reflecting the shifting moods of nature and the seasons. The concert stands as a powerful reminder of music’s capacity to unite, to comfort, and to bring hope in times of unrest – past and present. Welcome to an evening of depth and inspiration at Storkyrkan.
