Johann Sebastian Bach St John Passion BWV 245
Welcome to a powerful musical experience as S:t Jacob’s Chamber Choir performs one of the most significant works in Western music history – Johann Sebastian Bach’s St John Passion.
The St John Passion was first performed on Good Friday, 7 April 1724, in Leipzig. It was the first Passion Bach composed after assuming his post as Cantor at St Thomas Church, marking a new chapter in his career. The work is based on the evangelist John’s account of the suffering and death of Christ and stands out for its dramatic intensity and emotional immediacy.
Musically, the work alternates between dramatic choruses, heartfelt arias, and recitatives that narrate the Passion story. Hear the mournfully beautiful alto aria Es ist vollbracht (“It is finished”), the tender prayer of Ich folge dir gleichfalls (“I follow thee with joyful steps”), and the deeply moving Zerfließe, mein Herze (“Dissolve, my heart, in floods of tears”). The St John Passion is a musical journey that moves from darkness to light, from suffering to hope. Bach’s unique ability to convey the emotional and theological depth of the text through music finds full expression here – from the fury of the crowd’s cries to the profound stillness of the closing movements.
It promises a deeply moving concert experience that will linger long after the final note has faded.
